The engine looking slick

Meanwhile down in Dorset, Geoff and Martyn have been doing some sterling work on the engine. This update was from late November so that chaps are now even further down the line with the refurb.

As ever, I have had a very detailed update from Geoff and some great photos. Over to Geoff….

“Time for an update!

The missing big end bearing finally turned up which enabled us to complete the installation of all the liners and pistons. Once that was done we could then refit all the crankcase doors and put some more grey paint on.

We eventually managed to catch up with Dan, Dan the Steam Cleaner Man and he made a grand job of clearing sixty years worth of clag from the cylinder heads. We are currently refurbishing the heads and refitting them as we go. They all needed new exhaust valve guides but all the valves themselves were recoverable. The valves and seats have been re-cut and laboriously lapped in. Martyn’s favourite job (not!)

All the aluminium parts have come back from the polishers who have made an awesome job of cleaning them. I do hope you like Brasso as we can
guarantee the polish police will be calling on you once the engine is refitted!

The coming week will see a whole host of ball bearings fitted as well as the main timing case and timing chain. The only hold up we know of at the moment is a resolution to the main engine water pump question. Yours was missing and we are still trying to get either a complete rotary drive for
a Jabsco type pump or a ram type pump. The sooner the better as the plumbing will take a lot of thought and work. We must also sort out getting the two water pumps from Toby’s as we have to plan how to mount them in a more engineered manner. We don’t do cobbled up plumbing!

Incidentally have you got the fabrication and installation of the skin cooling tank sorted out? I see that you are busy painting the hull and must remind you that the skin tank has to be welded to the inside of the hull, below the water line alongside the engine room. Be a shame to burnoff the new paint.

I guess-timate that the old girl will be ready to rock and roll early in the New Year.(The Gardner not you). Visitors have stopped muttering yuk and ewwwww and we are starting to hear cor and wow

A bit more engine porn is attached.. first clues of mechanical gorgeousness peeping through!”

And the photos…

2015 update

/home/wpcom/public_html/wp-content/blogs.dir/d96/57898775/files/2015/01/img_1806.jpg
Things have been a bit quiet on the blog front at the end of 2014. Work on Betty is still progressing but life and other work and projects and too much driving and lugging stuff around and lurching from one crisis to the next has prevented me from actually posting about what has been happening. Lame, I know.
In November and December there was progress on all fronts. The engine is almost finished, the painting nearly complete and the design for the top has been progressing in leaps and bounds. I have therefore dedicated the next couple of days to getting up to date with the posting. And then I shall be pushing on with the boat a new. I am determined to have it ready for a NYE party aboard to welcome 2016. Betty will be turning 90 in 2016 so it is crucial she is looking shipshape. Keep watching this space!!

Paint on!

So, as I had hoped and prayed, with all the welding done and a coat of paint, betty looks bloody gorgeous… No need for commentary, the photos speak for themselves!

Thanks to led for the pics. I think he should have a sideline in boat photography as well as painting!

Quite the transformation Huh?

Result!!!

We have paint on the boat!!!! Two layers in fact!!! – the aluminium undercoat and the first white base layer!!!

IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE A BOAT. AND A SMART ONE THAT COULD FLOAT!!!

Check out the photographic proof…

Also note that all the windows has been reinstated.

FINALLY after A LOT of hard work blasting and welding we are making progress!!!

The final blast

As the WELDERS are finished, it’s now time for the final blast. This is to knock the millscale off the new metal and remove any rust that has formed on the parts that were blasted before. This should be a much quicker process as the new rust is minimal compared to the thick scale we found when it was hauled out of the water.

Straight after the blast, the first layer of proper paint is going on. This is a thick undercoat which Led has described as “like rubber”. I guess that’s a good thing…

It’s been a while

Apologies. It’s not that nothing has been happening, more that I haven’t had time to post. Plus I already told my mum and tom what is happening and i think they are the only ones reading it!

Anyway, there has been progress. The WELDERS have been diligently welding away and I think they are finally done! HURRAAAAAHHHHHHH!

I also have an update from Geoff and Martyn on the engine:
“Progress report! We have reached a milestone in the rebuild of your engine. Instead of it coming to bits we are now beginning to put it back together. A long way to go yet but it’s always good to be moving in the
right direction.

The pictures show the new liners, they are as big and heavy as they look! As you can see all six are now installed. We have also splashed a bit of
engine enamel on to the block and crankcase which is always a feel good
thing to do.

This coming week we will be running through all the static checks and
adjustments on your gearbox, finishing the core engine first paint coat and fitting the new pistons to the con rods and putting them into the
engine.

We still haven’t firmed up a date with Dan, Dan the Steam Cleaner Man but
expect to drop the remaining major parts to him for chemical cleaning and
a good wash soon.

The number six cylinder big end bearing is still to arrive, if it doesn’t
appear soon we will invoke Plan B and have your existing bearing
re-metaled”

As ever, the cracking explanation comes with pictures… Here they are:

Nose job – the results

Way way back in April, I posted an initial picture of the work on the bow. The photos, reposted below, show the rotten bits right at the bow cut away and the start of the repairs.

Well, the inserts have been inserted, the rivets have been riveted, and Betty has a new bow to be proud of.

(Can you tell that there are going to be ALOT of before and after photos from here on in?)

Bottoms on

I haven’t been down to the boat for a couple of weeks. Lots of day job work, a hatred of driving through south east London, and the knowledge that it was all in the safe hands of the welders has all meant that I haven’t been around that much. The upside to this is that when I visited today, a lot had changed and it really seems that the boat has come along way.

The bow is all fixed, the striker rails repaired, the rivets on the bottom fixed, the patches welded, the stern plates completed. So today four chaps were on site to attach the bottom plates. Not quite the final piece of the puzzle but without a bottom it look far from sea worthy.

Some action shots of the bottom plates being fixed into place…

Now that it is more like 80% complete, it is possible to see the lines of the hull and get a good idea of how sleek it will look when it is all finished.

First, a motivational reminder of how it looked when it was hoiked out the water…

And when there were massive gaping holes in the side…

And now look at it. Okay it still needs a final blast and a lot of paint but the transformation is definitely moving forwards.
